Iolite, also known as Cordierite in homage to the French mineralogist Louis Cordier, is a remarkable gem appreciated for its beautiful blue color, which can tend to purple, sometimes evoking sapphire or tanzanite. Its particularity lies in its strong trichroism, presenting three distinct colors depending on the axis of observation: blue, purple and gray/colorless. This unique characteristic allows easy identification of the stone.

Native mainly to India and Madagascar.

Its hardness of 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale makes it a gemstone strong enough to be mounted in jewelry.
